The world in a grain of sand

The letter sat before him, unopened, proped against a coffee mug.  He’d been waiting forever, it seemed, for the arrival of this envelope, yet he couldn’t bear to open it.  It was his entire future in there, either the dream job that would rescue him from the pit of despair he’d been drowning in for these past 10 years, never dreaming this stop along the way could be his final resting place, or it was a rejection letter, destroying every dream he had left, even though they were few.  He picked up the envelope, drank from the coffee mug and sat it back down next to the revolver.

“Dear Mr. Worth”
